Melo-D Generative AI Guitar Explained: Features, Price and the Backlash

The TemPolor Melo-D is a foldable, stringless smart guitar with built-in generative AI: hum a melody and it can turn it into a guitar solo, type a prompt and it can generate a full song, or upload a track and it writes tabs for you. It launched on Kickstarter in 2026 at $399 (with a $599 full price) and has split opinion between people who love its accessibility and guitarists who see it as missing the point.

What can it actually do?

  • Hum to solo: sing or hum a melody and the AI turns it into a guitar part you can play back or follow.
  • Text to song: describe a style or mood and it generates a complete song, including arrangements and AI vocals.
  • AI tabs: upload audio and get tablature to play along.
  • Guided play: lights on the neck and a scrolling display show when and where to press, similar to a rhythm game.
  • Sing-along mode: chords and backing for singing with friends.

TemPolor says the AI runs on its own TemPolor.AI model and that it is based on royalty-free music from its platform.

The reception: love it or hate it

The crowdfunding response was strong: MusicTech reported that the campaign passed its £3,800 goal many times over within its launch period. Design press praised the foldable body and the fact that it removes the two classic hurdles of finger technique and music theory.

Guitar press has been far harsher. Guitar.com’s review gave it a very low score and called it a waste of time, arguing that generating music for you undermines the point of playing. TechRadar’s take was more mixed, finding the tab and learning features genuinely smart while raising ethical questions about generative AI in music.

Who the Melo-D is for

  • Good fit: content creators who want quick song ideas, people who want to sing along with chords, and curious beginners who would never pick up a real guitar.
  • Poor fit: anyone who wants to learn real guitar technique, or musicians uncomfortable with AI-generated music.
